Senior Congress leader Shivajirao Deshmukh dies at 84

Deshmukh was first elected as an MLA in the year 1978. He also served as an MLC in 1996 and 2002.

Former senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Assembly Legislator Shivajirao Deshmukh passed away on Monday, due to prolonged illness. The senior leader was admitted to Bombay Hospital for one month and died on January 14, 2019, at 6:00 PM

Born in Sangli on September 1, 1935, Deshmukh died at the age of 84. The final rites of the senior leader will be carried out on Tuesday at Kokarud in Maharashtra’s Sangli district. 

He has been the former speaker of the state legislative assembly and was first elected as an MLA in the year 1978 followed by the year 1980, 1985, and 1990. He was also elected in Maharashtra Legislative Council in the years 1996 and 2002.

Talking about the same, Congress leader Manikrao Thakre said that he was a big guide to the Congress. He also expressed his condolences and said, “Shivajirao Deshmukh was the guiding force to Congress and the party has suffered a huge loss.”

He further added that the party knew as MLA from 1987. In this tragic time, the whole party stood by and his family.
