Digital billboards will soon dominate Mumbai streets

Advertisers will have to display civic messages on digital billboards for a minimum period of 30 days


Don't be surprised if you witness digital billboards across Mumbai, atop shopping malls, multiplexes and near petrol pumps. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finalised a new policy that will regulate street advertising/ hoardings in the city, making way for digital billboards, that will be first-of-its-kind in some areas.

On Friday, the civic body finalised the policy after examining 218 suggestions and objections. The same will be sent to BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta for approval and later, it will be tabled before the general body for a nod. Along with this, placing digital billboards on highways will be considered, but, the same will depend on case to case basis.

Nidhi Chaudhary, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Special) said that advertisers can choose to illuminate billboards if they want to but should switch off the lights by 11:00 pm. She further added that advertisers will have to display civic messages on the hoardings for a minimum period of 30 days, contrary to the original rule of 15 days, in exchange for a rebate.
