Complaints related to medicines received by Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have surged by 557% in just three months, prompting the department under Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe to intensify inspections and enforcement action.
Between June and August 2026, the FDA received 1,397 complaints related to medicines, compared with 850 complaints during the corresponding period of the previous financial year, according to data reported by Loksatta. The number of complaints investigated also rose sharply, with 924 cases taken up for inquiry, a 378% increase.
The FDA has also stepped up action against those involved in violations. During the period, cases were registered against 20 people and illegal medicines worth Rs 11.41 crore were seized.
The rise in complaints has coincided with increased inspections of drug manufacturing and sales establishments across the state. The FDA has been conducting checks to ensure that consumers receive medicines that meet quality and safety standards.
Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said inspections have been accelerated to ensure compliance with regulations and that strict action will continue against those found violating the rules.
The FDA’s intensified crackdown comes amid concerns over the quality, sale and distribution of medicines, with the department stressing that its primary objective is to ensure that citizens have access to safe and quality-assured medicines.
