The Bihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Monday sealed an entire building nestled on the Nepean Sea Road after 21 cases of coronavirus were reported from the society in the last one week.

According to sources, nineteen of the twenty-one patients were domestic help, drivers and security staff. Household help usually work in different apartments in a building which further leads to the spread of the infection. Assistant Municipal Commissioner of the D Ward, Prashant Gaikwad, speaking to the media, stated that in order to make sure that the infection was contained, the building has been effectively sealed.

Gaikwad further added that the domestic help, drivers and the security staff have been shifted to the quarantine centres while the residents are at home practising home isolation. Furthermore, the society has been asked to sanitize the common toilets atleast six times a day.

The D Ward of the BMC spreads across neighbourhoods like Malabar Hill, Gamdevi and Nepean Sea Road. As per data from the civic body, it shows that in June, most of the new cases of coronavirus in the ward are from residential complexes and high-rises.

The number of sealed buildings in Mumbai have nearly doubled in the last ten days with the maximum number of cases found in Andheri and Kurla. Till May 18, 1,767 buildings have been sealed. The number of containment zones had earlier increased to 696 from 674 during the same period. The civic body usually seals the floor or a building if a positive case is found in a congested area or locality.

The BMC further speaking about the decision to seal buildings have stated that the decision is usually taken on the basis of the spaces where a COVID-19 positive case is found. If a case is found in the slums it is usually sealed off completely as people in the slums live in small spaces, furthermore, use community toilets which increases the chance for the disease to spread rapidly.
