The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) plans to build a 1,000-bed hospital for the patients suffering from coronavirus within a shutdown company premises.

Similarly, a 1,000-bed facility was flagged off at Saket recently. Two more such hospitals are being developed at Mumbra and Kalwa. According to civic records, there are currently 250 ICU beds along with 49 ventilators and 371 fitted with oxygen in the city.

On Wednesday, with the addition of 1,182 positive cases of coronavirus, the number of patients in Maharashtra's Thane district went up to 24,674 according to officials. The officials further stated that most of the latest cases were reported from Navi Mumbai. With 29 persons succumbing to the coronavirus infection, the death toll in the district grew to 841 on Wednesday.

According to a report from the Thane chapter of the IMA, it stated that one of its members, a 70-year-old ENT surgeon, died of the coronavirus at a private hospital. In Thane city, with this death, a total of four doctors have succumbed to the disease. Of the total 1,182 positive cases in Thane district, as many as 321 were reported from Navi Mumbai, followed by 222 in Kalyan Dombivali and 197 in Thane city. In the neighbouring Palghar district, the number of positive cases grew to, 3062, while the death toll reached 106.

The new COVID-19 facility in Thane is said to have 500 oxygen beds, 200 ICU beds and 300 regular beds in total to treat the patients. Meanwhile, Vipin Sharma was appointed Thane municipal commissioner in place of Vijay Singhal whose new posting has not been announced as yet. With the surge in the cases of coronavirus in Thane, the state government replaced three municipal commissioners. The government replaced the civic chiefs of Navi Mumbai, Ulhasnagar and Mira-Bhayandar municipal corporations in order to tackle the surge in cases.
