In Palghar district’s Mokhada, a tribal man named Kalu Pawar hung himself, after being tortured for a debt of Rs 500, cite reports.

Kalu Pawar, a 48-year-old man, had borrowed money from Ramdas Ambu Korde, who is claimed to be a close aid of local MLA Sunil Bhusara. He incurred the loan to purchase a shroud for the last rites of his 13-year-old son. Thus, to make him pay off the debt, Korde asked him to work on his farm.

The Mokhada police have registered a case against Korde under the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act. After Pawar’s wife, Savitra filed a complaint, the police registered an FIR against Korde.

Earlier, the police had registered an accidental death report to allegedly subdue the issue. However, Vivek Pandit, a social activist who has been a voice for the welfare of tribals in Maharashtra, compelled the police to remove the victim’s body for a post-mortem and send it to JJ Hospital, Mumbai.

In her police complaint, Savitra stated that Korde had been harassing her husband since November because he had borrowed money for the last rites of his son Dattu. Dattu’s body was found on Diwali’s eve, just days post his disappearance.

Vivek Pandit, chairman of a panel appointed by the Maharashtra government to examine the situation of tribal programs, said that Korde who is the right hand of MLA Bhusara, was intimidating the police to not take action against his aide, cite reports. Bhusara is claimed to have also called Pandit to discourage him from pursuing the matter of lodging an FIR, state reports. According to accounts, after following up considerably against the accused, a case has been registered, but an arrest hasn’t been made so far.

Based on the report by Mid-Day, the MLA believes that the FIR against Korde is a sham and that if such an FIR is recorded, an instance will arrive when no tribal will be called for work in the field. Additionally, he has taken his hands of the allegations of intimidating the police and said that, he had asked them to conduct a detailed investigation prior to taking action.
