The metropolitan city of Mumbai hosts much more than your usual apartments and commercial complexes. Amidst the buzzing lifestyle, here are some forts you didn’t know were in the city.

1. Bandra Fort

Also known as Castella de Aguada, it was built in 1640 by the Portuguese as their watchtower. Locals now visit the fort which gives a view of the Arabian Sea and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. It is operational from 6 am to 6.30 pm.

2. Sewri Fort

Yet another fort, built by the Portuguese, was taken over by the British who also used it as a watchtower. If you’re lucky you can see some flamingos in February. It is open 24 hours.

3. Sion Fort

Near the Sion railway station, it has a park in its vicinity. It gives you the view of salt pans, buildings, and factories, along with wrecked rooms and an old cannon. You can visit it from 6 am-12 pm and 4-8 pm for free.

4. Worli Fort

Constructed by the British, it was small curvy roads leading to the fort amidst a fishing village. It overlooks Mahim Bay and has a temple and well. The entry is free from 5 am to 7.00 pm.

5. Vasai Fort

Also called Fort Bassein, it was once the headquarters of the Portuguese. Nearest to Vasai railway station, it gives a spectacular view of the sea. It is open all days of the week from 9 am to 6 pm.
