The Bar Council of India (BCI) has announced that the final year students of the three years and five year LLB programs will have to appear for online examinations. However, if that is not probable then the university can ask the students to write a research paper based on their subjects.

The BCI also stated that juniors can be promoted on the basis of the previous year’s marks, and also the marks obtained in the internal assessments. However, they too have to take the examinations after the universities and the colleges open.

So far, apart from the BCI, the MCI and Council of Architecture have already told the colleges that they are in favour of conducting online exams. However, some councils have warned that not conducting examinations could violate respective acts that they adhere to. What this means is that all final-year students who have passed without giving examinations may not be recognised by these councils. These councils may further decline to register them as architects, doctors or lawyers under them. As per sources, the state, in this case, may invoke Disaster Management Act, 2005 to supersede decisions made by the councils.

The CM of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray had earlier announced that final-year results would be announced on the basis of aggregate marks scored by the student in the past semesters. However, the students who feel that they can do better can appear for the winter session of October-November. Apart from the final-year students, the others will be promoted based on their performance in previous years along with the marks obtained in the internal examination of the current year. The universities have already authorized circulars on the breakdown that will be used while calculating the marks. According to the state-level committee report on the issue, those who are not satisfied with the marks can appear for exams once the universities begin.
