Schools and colleges and other educational institutions in the state have remained shut due to the coronavirus outbreak and the consequent lockdown. While the examinations of some classes were cancelled, government officials are also considering if to begin the new academic year. Earlier, reports stated that the schools will reopen with 30 per cent attendance, however, students from the primary schools will not be returning until the situation is brought back to normal.

In a conversation with Mumbai Live, Vishal Solanki, Commissioner(Education) Maharashtra State, said that the education department had decided to begin the new academic year on June 15, 2020. Speaking about the mode of the study mentioned that officials will start a digital study, further adding that the collector will decide if institutions can be opened in the green zones. This would mean that the school students would not suffer any academic loss as a consequence of the extended lockdown.

“We will mainly focus on television and radio education. The school will coordinate with the students and will take digital attendance,” Solanki added about the new structural outline of imparting education to the school-going children.

Schools all over the country were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has spread across the nation.  It is being suggested that guidelines will be brought in to reopen schools after the lockdown according to zones. As one cannot hold classes in red zones or orange zones, the decision to go digital has been made.

However, a lot of people do not have access to the digital medium in the red zones. So it is important to see how this is implemented throughout the state. The final decision regarding reopening the schools will be taken after discussions are conducted with the related ministries.

As of May 26, Maharashtra currently has 54,757 cases of coronavirus with 32,974 cases from Mumbai
