Dedication and determination can take one to great heights, and 25-year-old Prathamesh Hirve has proved it by entering ISRO as an electrical scientist and he will be posted in Chandigarh. He stays with his father Soma, who is a teacher at a civic school and mother Indu in a 10X10 house in Powai.

When he was told he wouldn't be an engineer

Prathamesh completed his SSC from Milind School and always wanted to pursue engineering. Prathamesh and his cousin brother took the aptitude test in which he was told that he didn't have the aptitude to become an engineer. That hurt him and he then decided to prove the test result wrong.

English was the barrier until he mastered it

In 2007, Prathamesh secured admission in Vile Parle’s Shri Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic College where he started pursuing electrical engineering. As he completed his education from Marathi medium, he was not able to understand English. When he told his professors about it, he was advised to read English books and the dictionary. He worked on it which benefitted Prathamesh a lot. Later, he completed his diploma and completed an internship with reputed companies like L&T and Tata Power.

He rejected ONGC, MAHAGENCO

Later, Prathamesh completed a degree in electrical engineering from Indira Gandhi College of Engineering, Navi Mumbai. Meanwhile, in May 2016, he applied for ISRO. He also appeared for UPSC exam but he was determined to join ISRO. Meanwhile, he received offers from ONGC, MAHAGENCO, MAHATRANSCO, METRO but he rejected them all. In May 2017, he applied again to ISRO and the rest is history.

He was selected among 16,000 applicants

On November 14, 2017, he received a letter from ISRO. He found out later that among 16,000 applicants, nine were short-listed and he was one of them.

Initially, his relatives and neighbours did not understand what the hullabaloo was for. But later, when they realised the importance of ISRO, they held him in high regard.

I did not know what exactly Prathamesh was going to do in ISRO or what ISRO was but then his father made me understand about the significance and now I am so proud of him,” Indu Hirve, Mother.

I want to do good for others, for our country, and for the world. I want to bring in a good change in the society. I am feeling proud of myself that I would be able to help and guide those students who are really working hard to fulfill their dreams,” Prathamesh Hirve.

We never stopped him from pursuing things he wanted to do. And this is the reason why today he was able to fulfill his dream. I believe that other parents should also let their children do what they love,” Soma Hirve, Father.
