Mahesh Palawat, the Vice President at Skymet weather, recently took to Twitter to announce that Monsoon has made its onset in Mumbai. He further added that a significant increase in rains can be witnessed from June 15-16. Palawat also predicts that moderate to heavy shower can be witnessed between June 16 to June 22.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday stated that four days after hitting coastal Maharashtra, the southwest monsoon has made steady progress and has now covered the entire state. IMD's Mumbai centre deputy director-general K S Hosalikar further added that in the last 10 days, parts of Central and North Maharashtra and Vidarbha have received incessant showers. Rainfall in some urban areas like Nashik has also caused some inconveniences. In Beed district, which has in the past witnessed acute water shortage for the last few years, received good showers in the past one week, filling up some of the dry water bodies. According to a senior official from the state agricultural department, the Chausala river bed which had been completely drying the entire summer has been filled up this Saturday after the rains.

Earlier, rainfall was reported in Harnai (in Ratnagiri) in Konkan, Ahmednagar in central Maharashtra, Aurangabad in Marathwada and Gondia in Vidarbha. The Colaba weather station in Mumbai had also recorded 1.5 mm rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on Saturday, while the Santacruz bureau reported 2.1 mm rainfall during the same time period. The city of Mumbai usually receives an average 2,354 mm of rainfall from the months of June to September, with July being the wettest month. The Mumbai rains have always been famous for its heavy monsoons. However, this time around the challenges has intensified as the city is already dealing with the novel coronavirus outbreak reporting more than 55,451 cases.

UPDATE: In a district-wise forecast, the IMD has authorized an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar for Monday and Tuesday. The IMD warned of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall along the west coast of Maharashtra and the southern states on Monday.
