Mahesh Palat, the VP of Skymet, took to Twitter on Wednesday to notify that rain and thunder clouds are still hovering over the south of Mumbai. He further predicted it to move north and the downpour to gradually increase initially over the southern suburbs than over the city.

Palawat had earlier mentioned that a significant increase in rainfall can be witnessed from June 15-16. He also predicted that moderate to heavy shower can be witnessed between June 16 to June 22. The southwest monsoon had earlier continued its advance and covered the whole of Maharashtra and parts of Chhattisgarh and Gujarat on Sunday while many parts of northern India experienced hot and humid weather. Meanwhile, as heavy showers have lashed Nashik in north Maharashtra, the IMD had earlier predicted that parts of North Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Mumbai will witness incessant rains.

In the past, incessant rains were reported in Harnai (in Ratnagiri) in Konkan, Ahmednagar in central Maharashtra, Aurangabad in Marathwada and Gondia in Vidarbha. The Colaba weather station in Mumbai on Saturday had also recorded 1.5 mm rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, while the Santacruz bureau reported 2.1 mm rainfall during the same time period. The city of Mumbai usually receives an average 2,354 mm of rain from the months of June to September.

For the medical practitioners and health workers in the city, the continuous rainfall poses to be worrisome as with the surge in the cases of coronavirus, the monsoon could give birth to vector-borne diseases in patients. The situation in Mumbai is already grave with hospital beds filling up rapidly. Health experts have further warned of diseases such as cases of malaria, dengue, leptospirosis and encephalitis to soar in coming months in the wake of the monsoons. What remains to be seen is how Mumbai deals with the situation given that the outbreak of coronavirus has already impacted the lives of the people living in the city.
