Powai residents have written a letter to Maharastra Cheif Minister Uddhav Thackeray and expressed shock at the construction of the cycle track in the water body. The residents feel this is harmful to the environment.

While addressing the situation, activist Pamela Cheema the S-ward coordinator for Action for Good Governance and Networking in India (AGNI), said that while interacting with Powai residents, they observed that even they share the same emotions.

The people in Powai believe that the cycle track work in the lake is destructive. Therefore, they wrote a letter to the CM asking him to cancel the cycle track work since nobody is in favour of it, added Cheema, who is also a Powai resident. She further added that the Indian marsh crocodiles bask and lay their eggs on the banks of Powai Lake.

In the letter, they have stated that the three lakes - Tulsi, Vihar, and Powai are part of the ecosystem. They overflow into each other, with Powai lake overflowing into the Mithi river. If the lake size is reduced for the cycle lake, it will lead to flooding in the city.

Earlier, environmentalists in Mumbai had written to the civic and environmental administers to proclaim a 'stop work' notice for the jogging and cycling track alongside Powai lake.

The locals have stated that no views and objections of the people residing in Powai and stakeholders were taken into account. Moreover, for the cycle track, no Environment Impact Assessment was done.
