More than 90,000 coronavirus cases have been identified in Mumbai, and as of July 10, with 1,354 fresh cases, the tally for the city has reached 90,461 cases, out of which 23,035 are active cases. The death toll hs increased to 5,205 with 73 new fatalities on Friday.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and its neighbouring areas have become the new hotspots for the virus. Thane district has witnessed a significant surge in the coronavirus cases since the lockdown was eased in the first week of June, where the cases have jumped to a shocking 52,000 in the district. Observing this, officials at the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) decided to extend the lockdown in the region till July 19, 2020.
To strengthen the efforts further in the district, around 300 more beds were added to the COVID-19 hospitals in the rural areas, and hospital bed capacity has now increased to 2,000.
Dharavi, which was one of the main coronavirus red zones in Mumbai, has been showing significant improvements over the past few days. The number of infected cases has reduced drastically in the area and the slums also earned praise by the World Health Organization (WHO) for being successful in breaking the chain of COVID-19 transmission, at their briefing on Friday.
By using the densely populated slums as an example, the global body emphasized the focus on community engagement, basics of testing, tracing, isolating and treating the infected patients being the key to break the chain of transmission of the deadly virus. After WHO, Aaditya Thackeray also took to Twitter to laud the efforts of the people of Dharavi, by appreciating the NGOs and other frontline workers.
