Maharashtra government on Tuesday, May 11, decided to suspend vaccination for those in the 18-44 age group who want Covaxin.

On Tuesday, May 11, Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope said that the government has decided to divert 2.75 lakh Covaxin doses that were purchased for vaccinating the 18-44 age group, towards the completion of second doses of the 45+ age group beneficiaries.

This decision comes amid a shortage of COVID-19 vaccine doses across the country. Also, there is growing concern regarding the shortage of supply of Covishield doses as well.

While talking to reporters, Tope said: "Around 35,000 doses of Covaxin are available, but over five lakh people need the second dose of Covaxin. For this, we are diverting Covaxin stock to those above 45 years of age."

"Three lakh doses of Covaxin which was for the 18 to 44 age group will now be diverted to 45 and above. We are suspending vaccination for the 18+ age group who want Covaxin," the Maharashtra minister added.

"Efficacy of the vaccine is largely affected if the second dose is not administered in a stipulated time. To avoid such health crisis, the state government has decided to divert three lakh vials (of Covaxin) purchased for the 18-44 age category for the people above 45 years," Tope said.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been instructed to look into the possibility of procuring vaccines globally in view of the adequate availability of vaccines in Mumbai.
