Mumbai: Five wards witness over 50 per cent rise in COVID-19 cases

The sharpest spike of 91 per cent in COVID-19 cases was reported from A Ward, which covers parts of Colaba, Cuffe Parade and Churchgate.

According to reports, as many as five civic wards have reported more than 50 per cent rise in cases of coronavirus in the second week of February compared with the first week of the month.

Moreover, the sharpest spike of 91 per cent in COVID-19 cases was reported from A Ward, which covers parts of Colaba, Cuffe Parade and Churchgate. The other wards that have reported more than a 50 per cent rise in cases are R-North (Dahisar and Borivli) at 62 per cent, E (Byculla and Mumbai Central) 58 per cent, F-South (Parel and Sewri) 52 per cent and M-East (Govandi) 51 per cent.

Earlier on Friday, February 19, only 14,880 persons were vaccinated in the state. While a total of 8,25,838 healthcare and frontline workers have been inoculated in Maharashtra so far, 27,521 of them have received the second dose of the vaccine too.

On the other hand, on Friday, Maharashtra recorded 6,112 fresh cases of the coronavirus taking the COVID-19 tally in the state to 20,87,632. With a major surge in cases, Mumbai continues to be a novel coronavirus hotspot with 823 patients clocked in the last 24 hours. At present, there are 44,765 active cases in the state. With 2,159 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 19,89,963.

Meanwhile, a day after the Maharashtra government imposed a weekend lockdown in the Amravati district, the administration imposed a 10-day lockdown in Yavatmal due to a recent spurt in coronavirus cases. Furthermore, district collector MD Singh stated that the number of coronavirus cases in the district has been on a rise since 1 February. Moreover, schools, colleges, coaching classes will remain closed. No religious functions will be allowed during this period. In addition, not more than 50 people will be allowed at weddings.
