With the daily number of fresh cases approaching the 16000 mark in India in the last 24 hours, the total number of COVID-19 cases has reached 456,183 with 14,476 casualties, 1,83,022 active cases and 2,58,685 recoveries so far. The city of Mumbai and Delhi account for more than 40 per cent of the total number of deaths reported in the country.

India witnessed yet another upsurge in the number of fresh cases of coronavirus touching 15,968 in the last 24 hours taking the total number of cases to 4,56,183, with Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Delhi reporting some of the highest numbers so far.

Maharashtra reported 3,214 fresh cases and 248 casualties in the past 24 hours, as the total number of cases crossed 1.39 lakh, the highest in the country. Mumbai accounts for over 1 lakh of the total number of cases in the state, with Mumbai city alone having confirmed 68,410 cases so far with a death toll of 3,844. Along with Delhi, which has witnessed 2,301 deaths to date, Mumbai and Delhi account for more than 40 per cent of the total number of deaths in the country reported due to COVID-19.

Delhi alone has confirmed 66,602 positive cases so far as the spread of the coronavirus shows no signs of abetting. This is an alarming situation given the population in both metropolitan areas are among the highest in the country. Among the top ten states with the maximum caseload, Delhi is growing at the fastest rate as the state continues to grapple with high demand for beds and treatment facilities. Although the figures seem to be worsening by the day, the number of recoveries continue to be much higher than the number of active cases in the country.

The Union ministry of health has said that the fatality rate for COVID-19 in India is one of the lowest in the world, at one death per one lakh population. This is much lower than the global average of 6.04. The Centre said that this has been made possible because of the cumulative efforts taken by the central and state governments in tackling the spread of the coronavirus.
