Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), according to reports, is planning to demolish and rebuild the present skywalk outside Bandra station that connects the Bandra court and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The civic administration will move the proposal worth INR 18.69 crore in front of the standing committee meeting.

According to reports, based on the proposal the MMRDA in 2007-08 had built that skywalk which was then handed over to the BMC for maintenance. However, since the flyover was made of steel its condition depleted owing to pollution amongst other factors. 

Back in 2019, accounts cite that a section of the skywalk at Bandra east collapsed, thus, injuring a woman. This caused an audit to be ordered on many skywalks. The civic authority then considered the demolition of a certain portion of the skywalk but due to the coronavirus induced lockdown, it was delayed. 

Since 2019, the said skywalk has been closed to the general public, remarked narratives. Based on accounts, M/S Construma Consultancy Private Limited was appointed as a technical consultant by the civic body. Following this, an estimated cost of INR 16.20 crore was set and the tenders were floated. 

In accordance with reports, while eight companies showed interest, the above-mentioned firm was given priority since it was ready to work for INR 2.49 cr less than the estimated cost.

The company has been asked by the BMC to keep one per cent of the total cost as a security deposit with the civic body. It is said that in 18 months the construction company will have to finish its work.
