Mumbai’s iconic Taj Mahal Palace has strengthened its position on the global luxury-hotel map, securing the 30th spot in The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026. The landmark property has climbed eight places from its 2025 position of 38th rank.

The Mumbai hotel is the only Indian property to feature in the top 50 this year. Its latest ranking marks the second consecutive year that the historic hotel has appeared on the prestigious global list.

The 2026 rankings were unveiled at an awards ceremony at Les Salles du Carrousel in Paris on September 15, marking the first time the event was held in the French capital after previous ceremonies in London.

Taj Mahal Palace Mumbai Climbs Eight Spots

The Taj Mahal Palace has moved from No. 38 in 2025 to No. 30 in 2026, placing the more than 120-year-old property alongside some of the world's most recognised luxury hotels.

Located opposite the Gateway of India in Colaba, the hotel has long been associated with Mumbai's waterfront skyline. Its distinctive dome, grand interiors and heritage architecture have made it one of the city's best-known landmarks.

The property was established by industrialist Jamsetji Tata and opened its doors on December 16, 1903.

Interestingly, the hotel predates the Gateway of India. The ceremonial arch was commissioned later, with its foundation stone laid in 1911 and the structure completed in 1924.

A Mumbai Landmark Since 1903

Over more than a century, the Taj Mahal Palace has hosted royalty, heads of state, celebrities, business leaders and international travellers.

Its architecture brings together several design influences, including Indian, Moorish, Oriental and Renaissance styles. Features such as marble interiors, intricate latticework, ornate staircases and heritage artwork contribute to the property's distinctive character.

The hotel's Heritage Wing retains its traditional aesthetic, with period furnishings and decorative details, while the Tower Wing offers a more contemporary interpretation of luxury accommodation.

The property has 285 rooms and suites across its Heritage and Tower wings, combining historic design elements with modern amenities.

How World’s 50 Best Hotels Rankings Are Decided

The World’s 50 Best Hotels ranking is based on votes from an international Academy comprising more than 800 members across 13 regions.

The voting body includes travel journalists, hoteliers, educators, experienced travellers and other hospitality professionals. Members vote anonymously based on their experiences of hotels around the world.

Rather than relying on a single fixed formula, the ranking reflects the collective experiences and views of Academy members, including aspects such as hospitality, design, service and the overall guest experience.

Hong Kong Retains No. 1 Position

Rosewood Hong Kong retained the top position in the 2026 edition, becoming the first hotel to hold the No. 1 spot since the awards began in 2023.

Capella Bangkok ranked second, while Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River took third place. Atlantis The Royal, Dubai was fourth, followed by Passalacqua, Lake Como, in fifth.

Passalacqua also retained recognition as The Best Hotel in Europe and The Best Boutique Hotel, adding to its strong record in the awards.

Two More Indian Hotels Make the Extended List

While the Taj Mahal Palace was India's sole representative in the global top 50, two other Indian properties appeared in the extended 51-100 ranking.

  • The Johri, Jaipur — No. 94

  • The Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur — featured in the extended list

The presence of three Indian properties across the overall ranking highlights the growing international visibility of the country's luxury hospitality sector.

Taj Mahal Palace Continues Its Global Run

The latest recognition adds another milestone to the long history of the Taj Mahal Palace. From its early years in colonial-era Bombay to its role as a contemporary luxury hotel, the property has remained closely connected with Mumbai's identity.

Its rise to No. 30 in the World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026 list places the Mumbai landmark among an elite group of hotels recognised by the international hospitality community.

For visitors, the hotel's appeal lies not only in its location overlooking the Arabian Sea but also in the combination of heritage architecture, luxury accommodation, dining and contemporary hospitality.

With its latest ranking, the Taj Mahal Palace continues its presence on one of the world's most closely watched hotel lists.
