Former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that there should be an increase in compensation to those affected by the recent Cyclone Nisarga. He also added that apart from the compensation, the government should further focus on restoring electricity and infrastructure.

Senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis spoke of a financial package for regions in Maharashtra that were damaged by cyclone 'Nisarga' which made landfall on June 3. Addressing a press conference, Fadnavis stated that the financial help of Rs 100 crore announced by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was too less.

"The need of the hour is to deviate from the standing orders of NDRF and provide financial assistance. When floods ravaged parts of the state last year, my government gave Rs 4,708 crore to Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur and Rs 2,108 crore to Nashik and Konkan," Fadnavis said to the media.

The former CM also spoke of the coronavirus outbreak, which has hit the state of Maharashtra the worst. Fadnavis stated that testing for the infection was in the range of 10,000 when the capacity was 35,000. He further added that the state government's "Mission Begin Again" to restart the economy and bring the state back to normalcy was a decent decision. However, adding that it required the support of the entire machinery on the ground.

The onset of the Cyclone Nisarga had earlier delayed the state's reopening. The Maharashtra government on Thursday had amended its lockdown relaxations under 'Mission Begin Again'. The amended order tightens the relaxations allowed for physical outdoor activities, the opening of shops, private offices re-opening, newspaper sales, educational institutions staff attendance, inter/intrastate movement.

Mumbai had earlier narrowly escaped damage due to Cyclone Nisarga which made landfall at Alibaug and crossed through Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Ahmednagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara to head towards Nashik where it weakened into a storm. Two people have died in Pune, while 3 people were injured. The BMC has further warned citizens of monsoon related diseases and has recommended monitoring symptoms for 7-10 days.
