The Maharashtra government on Tuesday, May 25, declared mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897.

Therefore, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has also announced free treatment for the rare fungal infection that is now being commonly seen in COVID-19 patients, both in active cases and in those who have recovered two to four weeks back.

The treatment is free in all government hospitals and hospitals empanelled with Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) – a state government scheme.

“131 hospitals have been earmarked for the treatment of the disease. A list of these hospitals providing free treatment for mucormycosis under Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Janaarogya Yojana scheme should be released," said Pawar.

He further stated: “The fungal infection can be cured if it is diagnosed in the first stage and simultaneously the treatment and medications are immediately started. With this, there would be no threat to life.”

This development came days after the Centre, on May 20, wrote a letter to all the states and union territories asking to make mucormycosis or black fungus a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897. Several states and UTs had immediately declared the fungal infection as an epidemic whereas, Telangana and Rajasthan had already declared mucormycosis a notifiable disease.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the cases of mucormycosis are growing rapidly. Addressing the media, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that there are 2,245 cases of black fungus in the state. He also stated that COVID-19 patients should not panic after contracting Mucormycosis and focus on controlling diabetes.

"Since the control of mucormycosis drugs is in the hands of the central government, each district should make an updated registration of the patients on the portal. Accordingly, the medicines will have to be accessed," he said, adding "To some extent, drugs for mucormycosis will be developed through the Haffkine Institute. Also, we will be making these drugs available through global tenders, so the availability of these drugs may improve to some extent next month."
