The Maharashtra government on Wednesday appointed Sanjay Kumar as the next chief secretary of the state. Kumar is a senior bureaucrat and a 1984 batch IAS officer who is currently the Additional Chief Secretary in the Home department and his stint there was supposed to end on February 28, 2021.

Kumar will take charge as newly appointed Chief Secretary of Maharashtra succeeding Ajoy Mehta who retires on June 30. Mehta, a 1984 batch IAS officer, will take over as the principal advisor to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. He is considered as a strong bureaucratic aide to Thackeray.

It was speculated that Mehta might get another extension as the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra. The senior bureaucrat was given an extension twice earlier as the Chief Secretary. Now, Kumar will take over on the post from Mehta and will serve as the chief secretary for eight months.

In an official statement, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has said that Mehta’s appointment as principal advisor to the CM comes in the backdrop of the financial crisis. The need for an officer with experience has been expressed by the CM’s secretariat.

Mehta has been given a new office in the CM’s secretariat where his experience will help in restarting the economic and administrative activities. Mehta was supposed to retire as the CS in September last year but has been given an extension of total nine months which ends on June 30.
