The state government had announced a lockdown last year due to the rising COVID-19 cases and the strict restrictions had adversely affected the transportation of essential commodities as well as other goods. To overcome this situation, the ST Corporation decided to begin the freight sector and the same was started from May 21, 2020, at very reasonable rates across the state.

This freight service eventually became useful as it was more affordable than private transport. Moreover, this service by ST was fast, reliable and safe service, and hence received tremendous response in a short period of time. Observing the same, the corporation has developed this brand called 'MahaCargo' and hence the freight trucks are now running in an attractive and new form.

The planning is done by the Divisional Controller in every district of the state and the freight is being controlled from the central office of the corporation and a separate department has been set up for operations. ST has 1150 trucks in its fleet for MahaCargo which are operated only for freight and the department has so far transported 7 lakh metric tonnes of goods in over 95,000 rounds, and has crossed the milestone of 14 million kilometers.

The government supplies food grains, seeds, school books, Election Commission voting machines, whereas the private companies have been using the services for other purposes too. On the other hand, mango growers from Konkan and cement companies are using the MahaCargo trucks to transport goods.

Following the success, the ST Corporation has decided to achieve a revenue target of INR 100 crore from freight within the next year, and in a cabinet meeting, the team has decided to hand over 25 per cent of the freight traffic carried out by private carriers through various government departments to the State Transport Corporation.

ST corporation has appealed to the citizens and businesses to reach out on 022-23024068 for more information regarding the service.
