In order to tackle the financial crisis, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) had decided to slash down the ticket prices. After which, the minimum ticket price for a BEST bus journey was brought down to ₹5 for a normal bus and ₹6 for an AC bus journey. This move worked in favour of BEST Corporation as it witnessed a gradual rise in daily ridership.
Looking at the overwhelming response, the transport wing decided to add more buses to its inventory. Therefore, BEST introduced electric buses along with Mini-Midi buses. Now, BEST has decided to expand its electric bus operations and is planning on introducing electric buses running on renewable energy sources, including solar-powered buses.
The decision comes after the meeting which was held post the introduction of electric buses. A range of options were discussed to bring alternatives for the charging of electric buses. The officials suggested that the buses must be charged using solar and renewable energy sources.
Meanwhile, it is expected that the introduction of options for energy sources for electric buses will also bring down the maintenance cost.
