On Sunday, April 28, senior executives from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), over 150 BMC engineers, and several professors from IIT Bombay gathered at its campus in Powai. The meeting focused on the concretization of Mumbai roads.

The concretization project is currently underway, with the goal of increasing the life of roads to at least 20 years. This is a big increase from the standard Defects Liability Period (DLP) of 10 years.

The civic engineers involved in the project shared their experiences and challenges during the discussion. They highlighted issues such as the significant distance between the road site for cement concrete and the vehicles that transport gravel, the location of ready mix concrete (RMC) plants, traffic congestion, and the unpredictable weather conditions in Mumbai.

Earlier this month, the BMC rolled out bids to concretize 312 km of roads. But, it was later postponed because of the model code of conduct. Furthermore, the concretization process can be delayed by the monsoon.

There are 2,050 km of roads in the city, of which about 1,000 km are concreted. To eliminate potholes in the city, the BMC made the decision to concrete every road. 397 km of roads were concretized by the BMC last year.

Five firms were selected to participate in the largest-ever civic contract, valued at INR 6,080 crore. So far, 15–25% of the concretization work has been finished.
