In order to provide a cleaner environment to Mumbaikars, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) started a cleaning programme in all 25 wards on March 30 under the leadership of Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) Sudhakar Shinde. The most recent deep cleaning drive took place on Saturday, April 6.

The cleaning efforts of BMC have shown positive results. So far, the month-long campaign has resulted in the collection of 102 MT (metric tonnes) of garbage, 70 MT of waste, and 25 MT of bulky items. Additionally, a stretch of 634 kilometres of roadways was thoroughly cleaned.

This initiative is frequently taking place after the city was ranked at 37 in the annual clean city survey, also known as Swachh Survekshan 2023. Whereas, the states are concerned Maharashtra secured 1st place.

The drive involved 1,555 employees and 175 vehicles and machinery. It was conducted at several locations, including Sakinaka Metro Station, Andheri Ghatkopar Junction Road, Andheri Subway Marg, Charni Road Station, Maharishi Karve Marg, and Andheri Subway Marg.

BMC officials have been actively working on the drive. The authority is aiming to make sure that no area is overlooked during the cleaning process. Major roads, buildings, chawls, and small lanes were all part of the cleaning drive.

However, the campaign has faced criticism from local authorities and citizens. They argue that the drive has neglected places that need immediate cleaning. The drive has also been called a waste of resources. Concerns have been raised about water conservation in the summer season.

Responding to this, civic officials assured that the campaign has made many positive changes in cleaning the city. It has removed dust from sidewalks and roads. It also cleaned public restrooms, removed abandoned cars, and dealt with unauthorised hoardings.
