Thane police busts baby-selling racket; 8 arrested

A baby-selling racket was busted by Thane Police in Thane where eight people have been arrested, which included six women.

Thane police’s crime unit-I were tipped-off and they kept a close watch near a hotel which was around Mulund Check Naka. According to police inspector Nitin Thackre, the incident took place on Sunday evening where police spotted a man and a woman carrying a one-month-old boy in a suspicious manner. 

When police intercepted the duo, they tried to get away with vague answers. After questioning them, they revealed that they had come to sell the child in Mumbai to a person for INR 1.35 lakhs. After further questioning, the duo added that two people came to Mumbra from Ahmednagar to sell a child. They then met the duo in Mumbra who came to Mumbai to sell, reported Mumbai Mirror.

After arresting the duo, police nabbed five other women and a man from Mumbra railway station.

All eight have been booked under sections 361 (kidnapping from lawful guardianship), 365 (kidnapping with an intent to secretly and wrongfully confine a person), 368 (wrongfully concealing or keeping in confinement a kidnapped person) and 372 (selling minor for purposes of prostitution) of IPC and relevant provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. 

Police have sent the infant to a child care centre in Thane and further investigations are on.
