Former Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam has resigned from the party after the uproar over his statements against the leadership amid seat-sharing talks with Shiv Sena (UBT) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Nirupam informed Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge of his decision to leave the party in a brief letter.

"I have finally decided to fulfill your long-awaited wish and I announce that I wish to resign from the primary membership of the All India Congress Committee," Nirupam wrote in his letter.

On April 3, Congress had expelled former Sanjay Nirupam from the party for 'indiscipline' and repeated statements against the party. The former Congress leader had warned the Sena for taking an "extreme stand". Nirupam suggested that the Congress party's alliance with Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena might prove to be "self-destructive."

For the unversed, he had said the Congress leadership shouldn't allow itself to be arm-twisted by Shiv Sena (UBT).

"Accepting the Shiv Sena (UBT's) decision to unilaterally field candidates in Mumbai amounted to allowing the destruction of Congress," Nirupam had said.

The party had earlier removed his name from the list of star campaigners. The former Congress MP, who was aiming to contest from the Mumbai North-West seat, had expressed his unhappiness over Shiv Sena (UBT) fielding Amol Kirtikar.
