Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday, September 25, announced that the entire 120 acres of Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi Racecourse will be converted into a lush green open space on the lines of Central Park in New York. It will be known as ‘Mumbai Central Park’.

This ambitious world-class project in the heart of the city aims to create a vast, accessible recreation area for residents and tourists, complete with all amenities.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been finalised. The project will lay the foundation for the construction of Mumbai's best, informed Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

As part of the 'Swachhta Hi Seva 2025' campaign, a special cleanliness drive called 'Swachhotsav' is currently underway.

On 25 September 2025, a major community cleanliness drive was carried out from Metro Cinema to Fashion Street under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. During the event, he also shared important updates about the upcoming Central Park project.

In July 2024, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) had signed an agreement to hand over the Race Course Ground to the municipal authorities. The agreement was signed in the presence of Eknath Shinde.

Out of the total 211 acres, 120 acres are now in the possession of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. While the remaining 91 acres of land has been leased back to RWITC. The lease period is from 1 June 2024 to 31 May 2053.

"The public park, inspired by New York's Central Park, will have a botanical garden, a play area for children, walking and jogging tracks, landscaped water bodies and dedicated spaces for art, yoga and meditation. Notably, the design of this park will allow citizens to experience uninterrupted views of the racecourse track from every level of the renovated stands," an official said.

In July 2025, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation approved RWITC's proposal to build a clubhouse and banquet hall on 32 acres of the 93 acres leased at Mahalaxmi Racecourse.

While the layout plan is being approved, the construction department is awaiting approval from the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC).
