The Maharashtra government will start basic military training for students from Class 1 to promote discipline, patriotism, and daily physical activity among children. This was announced by School Education Minister Dada Bhuse on Monday, June 2.
He said that retired soldiers will provide training to the students. He added that the training will help students build good habits and a love for the country. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also welcomed the plan.
A total of 2.5 lakh ex-servicemen will help carry out the training. They will work along with sports coaches, NCC members, scouts, and guides.
This move comes at a time of rising tensions between India and Pakistan. On April 22, the Pahalgam incident increased hostilities. On May 7, India responded with strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The action was called "Operation Sindoor".
To prepare for emergencies, the government also held mock drills. A second round of drills took place on May 31. These drills were part of "Operation Shield" and aimed to improve civil defence.
