On the spectrum of good news for the people living in Mumbai, the number of individuals in-home quarantine has declined by 28 per cent in the last one month as the curve for the coronavirus continues to flatten in the city.

Moreover, the number of people in institutional quarantine in the city has decreased by 62 per cent during the same period.

In the past, BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had notified the public that the doubling rate in the city happens to be 68 days.

This comes as a piece of good news for the people living in Mumbai as the widening gap between the number of tests conducted and the positive cases can be attributed to many factors, namely, increased testing across the community. Since July 3, the BMC had permitted everyone to conduct testing for the coronavirus without a prescription from the medical practitioner. With the scope of testing now extended from targeted testing of symptomatic and high-risk contacts to the general population, some experts believe that this has resulted in a positive outcome.

Meanwhile, the movement of people for non-essential activities such as shopping and outdoor exercises has been restricted within the neighbourhood area limits in Mumbai. The civic body has further stated that unrestricted movement will be permitted only for work or medical emergencies. Any person violating the COVID-19 containment norms can, therefore, be proceeded against according to provisions of Section 51 to 60 of the Disaster Management Act 2005 besides legal action under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
