A 55-year-old fisherman, identified as Ashok Kishan Rathod, died after a fishing boat capsized off the Mumbai coast near Khar Danda on the evening of May 27, 2026.
According to officials, the incident took place around 6:15 pm near the lighthouse area at Warin Pada in Khar (West), where two fishermen had ventured into the sea for fishing activities. The boat reportedly overturned due to rough sea conditions and strong winds.
While another fisherman, Ketan Rathod (32), was rescued and taken to hospital with injuries, Ashok Rathod was found unconscious during the rescue operation and was later declared dead at Bhabha Hospital.
Rescue teams and local authorities rushed to the spot after receiving information about the accident. Preliminary investigations suggest turbulent weather conditions may have contributed to the mishap.
Authorities have urged fishermen to exercise caution while venturing into the sea, especially during unstable weather conditions along Mumbai’s coastline. The incident has once again highlighted safety concerns for small fishing vessels operating during the monsoon season.
