Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cleared proposals worth ₹1,020 crore at the standing committee meeting on Friday without much discussion. In less than a week, the BMC has cleared proposals worth ₹2,300 crores and the standing committee is set to meet once again on Saturday, a non-working day as it is the second Saturday of the month, to approve more proposals.

Once the model code of conduct is implemented by the Election Commission of India, the BMC will be unable to pass any major proposal, which is the only explanation for the pre-model code rush to push last-minute projects through

Major proposals related to SAP (IT software used in BMC), hospitals, road reconstruction, gardens and water projects for Mumbai were approved on Friday. However, hardly any discussion took place before approving such important proposals. The meeting started at 2:20 pm and concluded within the next 25 minutes. Of the 66 proposals for approval, 64 were approved but only three were discussed.

Most probably, the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections is likely to come into force today. Once it is rolled out, the BMC cannot approve major proposals. Therefore it is important to pass major proposals to allow the smooth functioning of the BMC in the election period.  However, not all corporators are happy with the committee’s decision to clear proposals at this rate, without discussion.

A leader from the opposition benches in the standing committee accused the Sena of using the committee meeting for election purpose. An opposition corporator said that the Sena is in a hurry to clear proposals as they want to take credit for the work before the election and that’s why they are not allowing any discussions.
