The Mumbai fire brigade has taken action against 79 establishments for violating safety norms.
As a part of a special fire safety campaign, this drive has been launched by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in light of the upcoming new year celebrations. The drive was prompted in wake of the blaze at a Goa pub in which 25 people were killed.
The fire brigade inspected 1,221 establishments between December 22 and 26. The inspections were conducted at hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars and other venues that witness large public gatherings during New Year celebrations.
Of the total establishments, at least 10 malls, 148 pubs and clubs, 628 restaurants, 12 party halls, 25 five star hotels and five gymkhanas were inspected.
The civic body has issued notices to 20 establishments, while action was taken against 59 others for various violations. Action was also initiated against four establishments that were otherwise compliant but had stored one or two excess LPG cylinders.
Meanwhile, 1146 were found complying with the fire safety norms.
The statement further mentioned that an action against non-compliant eateries is being taken under the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act.
It is pertinent to note that the fire safety campaign and drive continued till December 28. The BMC further said inspections would continue even after the campaign as part of routine enforcement and appealed to establishment owners to strictly follow fire safety norms, while urging citizens to remain vigilant during New Year celebrations.
Ahead of the new year’s revelries, the BMC directed eateries to adhere to all necessary measures pertaining to fire safety.
Earlier on December 19, the BMC had served a notice to the National Sports Club of India (NSCI) in Worli over lapses and non-compliance over fire safety measures within the premises.
