After almost a year without lights, Gorai Beach in Borivali is now lit up. This comes after many complaints from residents who said the lack of lighting made the area unsafe and difficult to access after sunset. The beach is a popular picnic spot and also an access route for people living in the area.

The new lighting was installed with the help of MLA Sanjay Upadhyay, Adani Electricity, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). As per reports, a total of 94 lights have been placed along the coastline.

The beach had been in complete darkness every evening since May 2025. The earlier lights had stopped working due to damage caused by sea breeze, sand, and water at the start of the monsoon. One of the poles had also broken and fallen onto the sand. Work could not continue during the monsoon season despite repeated complaints.

The problem of poor lighting became an issue during municipal and assembly elections. Many residents complained about darkness near the shoreline. The area is surrounded by a hill, which limits other access routes. As per a report by FPJ, the rules under the Coastal Regulation Zone delayed permanent lighting for a long time. Temporary arrangements were made earlier, but they failed.

There were plans to install new lights in January, but the work did not happen. In one incident last year, a minibus got stuck during high tide. It happened early in the morning, and people were able to help and remove the vehicle. Citizens raised concerns that it would have been very difficult if this happened in the evening.
