Another 900 million liters per day (MLD) pump will be installed at the Bhandup complex, allowing Mumbai to receive water with greater pressure and force.

Currently, water is supplied to Mumbai from Bhandup via pipelines using an existing pump with a capacity of 220 MLD. To enhance the supply further, a new pump capable of transporting 900 MLD will be added.

At the Bhandup complex, a centrifugal pump with a capacity of 3,437.5 cubic meters per hour will be installed at the 900 MLD pumping station. The project is expected to cost approximately INR 4 crore.

This advanced centrifugal pump, based on modern technology, can lift and transmit large volumes of water quickly, improving the overall efficiency of the city’s water supply system.

The Bhandup pumping station is one of the most important centers in Mumbai’s water distribution network. Once the new pump is operational, water pressure in various parts of the city will increase, and interruptions in supply will be reduced, according to officials from the municipal water department.

Additionally, the load on older systems will decrease, which could reduce maintenance costs. The pump will help ensure smooth water supply even during peak demand periods or hot weather.

After this municipal initiative is completed, residents of Mumbai will have access to water with greater force and consistency.

Currently, Mumbai receives about 3,950–4,000 MLD of water daily. This water comes mainly from seven major reservoirs, including Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Tansa, and Upper Vaitarna. It is treated at the Bhandup and Panjeerapur water treatment plants before being supplied to the city and surrounding suburbs.
