People in the city of Mumbai have started stepping out of their homes, to resume their daily work, and normalise the life, which was changed for the last few months due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the government has issued guidelines for 'new normal' and unfortunately, people have not been following the same.
Officials, during the announcement of 'Mission Begin Again' initiative had asked people to wear masks when in public, and follow the same guidelines as the lockdown. However, it has been observed that many people walk around without wearing them, and keeping this in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued directives to take strict action against such citizens.
Acting upon the same, the team from BMC has so far caught hold of 82,497 people, between October 1 and 21, 2020, and collected a total fine of INR 1.64 crore from them. Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had asked the team to impose a fine of INR 200 is being levied on those who do not wear masks in the public places.
To emphasise on the same. the state government also launched several campaign for the betterment of the society, and messages have been shared through the 'My Family, My Responsibility' and 'No Masks, No Entry' campaigns designed for the awareness. However, a large number of people have been ignoring the same, and this has led to BMC taking such actions.
As per records, between April 9 and October 21, 2020, officials have collected a fine worth INR 2.30 crore from over 1.7 lakh citizens. Out of this, action on more than 82,000 citizens was taken action in these 21 days in October, and a fine of INR 1.64 crore was recovered which amounts of 72 per cent of the total amount collected so far.
