The Mumbai Police has issued a strict directive prohibiting its nearly 51,000 personnel from creating reels, vlogs, or social media content while wearing official uniforms.
The department has released a formal circular warning that disciplinary action will be taken against those found violating the order.
The order, which has come into immediate effect, warns of strict disciplinary action against those who fail to comply, stating that it may also affect the image and discipline of the police force.
The circular, signed by the deputy commissioner of police (Special Branch) Dattatray Kamble, states that such videos often inadvertently reveal office premises, government vehicles, equipment or duty-related information, raising concerns over confidentiality and security.
The move follows a July 2025 Government Resolution (GR) regulating social media use by state government employees.
In addition, the Mumbai Police’s Social Media Lab has been tasked with actively monitoring digital platforms to identify and register any breaches of the order.
Some officers of the Mumbai Police force are very popular on social media. They have thousands of followers on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media. Special Branch teams have started tracking down such police officers.
The Special Branch has been given the responsibility of taking action against officers and officials who circulate material in uniform on social media and submitting a report.
The police force is considered a disciplined force and disciplinary action has been warned against such behavior.
