The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai has started a scheme ‘Ashray Yojana’ for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) sanitation workers’ colonies. Under this scheme, it is planned to make affordable housing available, along with the redevelopment of about 28,000 sanitation workers' colonies. At present, the redevelopment work is being planned at 39 places, as per the Minister of State for Urban Development Dr. Ranjit Patil.
Bhai Girkar has shown interest in the conditions of the BMC sanitation workers’ policies. The government is serious about their issues and will try to resolve technical difficulties in the regard as soon as possible. The sanitation workers risk their lives cleaning drains, dearly affecting their health. The life expectancy of these workers is diminishing every day. Taking a note of this, the Government is trying to make available clean and affordable housing colonies for the workers. Patil said that if the workers are unable to pay their Mediclaim installment, it will be immediately paid off.
The budget of 2017-18 had been raised to ₹36.2 crores for this redevelopment project. In the current budget, ₹44. 73 crore has been granted, as informed by Patil.
