On Monday, June 28, a record number of 1,80,821 people took the vaccine in Mumbai. It surpassed the previous single-day high of 1.54 lakh vaccinations that was registered on Saturday, June 26.

With this, the city has completed administering 52.74 lakh doses since January.

However, several Mumbaikars also complained of being turned away from vaccination centres for not having an online appointment or registration on CoWin. While the civic officials blamed it on limited doses allocated to centres that further get distributed between multiple categories.

Explaining further, an official said that if there are 200 doses, for instance, 50 per cent has to be earmarked for the 18-44 age-group and another 50 per cent for people above 45 years. Within these groups, 50 per cent have to be given to online appointment holders and the remaining to those walking in. Doses are further broken down to those coming for their first and second shots.

Meanwhile, another ward official said walk-in slots get exhausted within the first hour of vaccination on most days. So people who come to these centres even post 11 pm have to be sent away.

The problem here is the availability of doses. If there is a steady supply coming every day, the civic body can vaccinate more people daily, he added.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray stated that the government is ready to inoculate 15 lakhs of people every day.

As the BMC has opened walk-in registration even for the 18-44 years age group, the civic-run centres alone inoculated 88,840 beneficiaries in a day, while the private centres across 62 hospitals administered 85,621 doses.

Among those vaccinated yesterday were 13,417 senior citizens, 47,371 people aged 45-59 years and 1,18,334 beneficiaries in the 18-44 age group.
