For the first time in the history of Mumbai rains, several areas at South Mumbai such as Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate and Hutatma Chowk were found waterlogged. All these areas are located near the spots where the Metro-3 construction work is going on and saw heavy flooding following heavy rainfall on Sunday.
Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar had said earlier that the BMC will not be responsible for any flooding near Metro sites.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) claimed that the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) had failed to take precautions specified in a June 29 letter. The civic body accused the Metro Corporation of adding up to the people’s woes living in the A-ward of South Mumbai.

The BMC wrote a letter to the MMRCL stating that it found the Metro corporation not undertaking anti-waterlogging measures. The letter also pointed that a sedimentation tank was missing at all Metro stations, due to which slurry water was directly being discharged into the ward’s storm water drainage system, without the civic body’s permission and threatened the Metro corporation of an action by the BMC for damaging the city’s storm water drain.
Also, during pre-monsoon inspection work, the BMC had found that the minimum required number of dewatering pumps at each Metro station was not installed and had informed them to take immediate measures.
