Mumbai: BMC orders inquiry after woman dies from falling into open manhole in Andheri

On September 25, heavy rains lashed the city of Mumbai, causing waterlogging in places in the city and suburbs. Similarly, a woman lost her life after falling into a drain in the Seepz area of Andheri (East). 

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter. A three-member committee has also been appointed to inquire into the circumstances of the incident and submit a detailed report within three days.

Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar and Chief Engineer (Vigilance) Avinash Tambewagh are the other two members of the inquiry committee headed by Circle 3 Deputy Commissioner Devidas Kshirsagar. The committee has been tasked to conduct a thorough investigation into the fatal accident and identify the lapses that led to the mishap.

A 45-year-old woman, Vimal Gaikwad, drowned in an open drain (manholes) in Andheri's MIDC area after heavy rains in Mumbai on Wednesday night. Vimal was pulled out by the Mumbai fire brigade and admitted to Cooper Hospital but was declared dead by doctors.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 12) Mangesh Shinde said that the Mumbai Police has registered the incident as an accidental death without a high-level inquiry by the Municipal Corporation.
