Parking charges across Mumbai’s civic-run pay-and-park facilities may soon be increased, as a proposal for a 40% hike has been moved by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The revision has been proposed at a time when parking shortages are already being faced by citizens across the city. The proposal has reportedly been cleared by the office of the Additional Municipal Commissioner for Projects, while final approval from civic chief Ashwini Bhide is still awaited.

The proposed hike is significant because parking rates at BMC-run facilities have not been revised since 2021. The earlier rates had expired in March 2021, but no change was made due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the dissolution of the civic house in March 2022. The existing parking policy had originally been introduced in 2015, although implementation of revised charges had been delayed after opposition was raised by citizens. The new rates had eventually been brought into effect in 2017.

At present, parking charges are divided according to vehicle type and location demand. In high-demand commercial areas, two-wheelers are charged between ₹20 and ₹100, four-wheelers and taxis between ₹70 and ₹235, and buses between ₹100 and ₹615 on an hourly basis. In B-category areas, two-wheelers are charged ₹15, while four-wheelers are charged between ₹45 and ₹155. In residential zones, charges are lower, with two-wheelers paying ₹10 to ₹35, four-wheelers ₹25, and heavy vehicles ₹35 to ₹200.

The charges are currently applied across 100 civic-run parking facilities in Mumbai. Of these, 37 are off-street parking lots and 63 are on-street parking lots. Together, these facilities can accommodate nearly 40,000 vehicles. However, this capacity is considered inadequate for a city where vehicle numbers have continued to rise sharply. According to Maharashtra government RTO data, Mumbai’s vehicle population across the island city and suburbs had reached 51.34 lakh by March 2025.

The proposal is still at a preliminary stage and will need approval from the standing committee and general body before implementation. Alongside the fee revision, BMC is also working on a smart parking policy. Under this plan, a digital dashboard showing parking availability across Mumbai is expected to be created. The project, estimated at ₹3 crore, may be made available through a mobile app or web portal.
