The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to build a water reservoir to provide uninterrupted water supply to South Mumbai in addition to the existing 136-year-old Malabar Hill reservoir, which is in need of an urgent repair.

The Malabar Hill reservoir supplies water to South Mumbai wards that include A (Fort), C (Girgaon) and D (Malabar hills) wards. The reservoir is located right below Hanging Garden.

As per the civic body, the new reservoir’s capacity of holding water would be 20 per cent extra as compared to the old one. The civic body is planning to repair a total of five compartments of the Malabar Hill reservoir that has the capacity of holding 147 million litres. When the compartments would be shut to carry out repair work, the new reservoir would help maintain a regular supply of water to South Mumbai.
Meanwhile, the construction of the new reservoir is expected to begin in the next three to four months.
