In a strong move to improve cleanliness across the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will now use CCTV surveillance to monitor and prevent illegal garbage dumping at identified spots.
Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has directed officials to install CCTV cameras on a pilot basis in areas where repeated dumping of waste has been reported. The initiative aims to track offenders and ensure stricter enforcement of cleanliness rules.
During a recent inspection of solid waste management systems in areas such as Wadala, Chembur, and Chunabhatti, the commissioner reviewed sanitation conditions and issued instructions to strengthen monitoring mechanisms. She also stressed the need for better waste segregation, citizen awareness drives, and active public participation in maintaining cleanliness.
The BMC has also been asked to adopt innovative approaches, including collaboration with housing societies, NGOs, and educational institutions, to improve waste management in dense and slum-dominated areas.
Officials said that under the “Mumbai Clean League” campaign, emphasis is being placed on making cleanliness efforts more visible and effective across public spaces. Ward-level teams have been instructed to maintain stricter oversight and ensure prompt action against violations.
