A major cultural landmark was added to Navi Mumbai International Airport on Saturday when a 20-foot bronze statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji was unveiled by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The ceremony was organised on Shiv Rajyabhishek Day, a date on which the coronation of Shivaji in 1674 is commemorated across Maharashtra.
The installation was presented as a tribute to one of the most influential figures in the state’s history. During the event, the importance of Shivaji’s coronation was highlighted, and the establishment of Swarajya under his leadership was remembered. The occasion was also used to emphasise the enduring relevance of Shivaji’s ideals and legacy in modern Maharashtra.
It was recalled that instructions for the installation of the statue had previously been issued during an inspection of the airport project. The decision was influenced by the airport’s location in Raigad district, an area closely associated with the Maratha ruler and the historic capital of Swarajya. Satisfaction was expressed that the monument had been completed and unveiled within a relatively short period.
A broader effort to showcase Maharashtra’s identity was also reflected in the airport’s design. Cultural influences from the Konkan region have been incorporated, while artistic elements inspired by the Warli tradition have been integrated into various aspects of the airport environment. Through these features, a distinctly Maharashtrian character has been created for travellers arriving from different parts of India and abroad.
Alongside the unveiling, attention was once again directed towards the long-standing demand for the airport to be named after Dinkar Balu Patil. The proposal has continued to receive support from local residents, farmers and families affected by development projects in the region. Patil has long been regarded as a prominent advocate for the rights of landowners whose properties were impacted by large-scale infrastructure initiatives.
The state government’s position on the issue was reiterated during the event. It was stated that all necessary formalities at the state level had been completed and that efforts were continuing to secure approval from the central government. Confidence was expressed that the naming proposal would eventually be approved.
With the unveiling of the Shivaji statue and the continued push for the airport’s renaming, both Maharashtra’s historical legacy and local aspirations were placed at the centre of discussions surrounding the state’s newest international aviation hub. The airport’s role as not only a transportation gateway but also a cultural symbol was further strengthened through the addition of the monument and the emphasis placed on regional heritage.
