The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has floated an e-tender to appoint an independent engineer for the next phase of development of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, paving the way for the construction of the airport's second terminal.

The move comes after the airport's first terminal handled around 2.3 million passengers since commencing operations. With passenger traffic steadily increasing, CIDCO has initiated the process to accelerate the airport's expansion under its third phase of development.

According to the tender, the independent engineer will oversee the implementation of the third phase of the project and monitor works related to the integrated first and second phases. The consultant will be responsible for technical supervision, quality control, adherence to timelines and overall project monitoring on behalf of CIDCO.

CIDCO has invited online bids from experienced international consulting firms, joint ventures and consortiums. The selected consultant will be appointed for 36 months, with the contract to be awarded through a quality-and-cost-based selection process.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport master plan provides for four passenger terminals. While the first terminal is operational, the appointment of an independent engineer is expected to expedite planning and execution of the second terminal, which is aimed at meeting future passenger demand and easing pressure on Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
