The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on May 17, 2020, updated the list of containment zones in Mumbai. The new report reveals that there is a 75 per cent decrease in the number of zones, where, as of May 17, there are 674 containment zones or red zones in Mumbai, in comparison to 2,643 zones which were listed on May 12, 2020.
As per the new list, these zones are classified into containment zones and buildings. Currently, chawls and buildings are removed from the list and instead, areas have been named since they will be managed by respective MLAs and officials from the BMC. Chawls and buildings which remain sealed will have to be managed by the respective societies.
BMC officials, Mumbai Police along with the state government are working relentlessly, to ensure the cases reduce in the city. As of Sunday, the coronavirus (COVID-19) tally in Mumbai crossed 20,000-mark with 20,150 cases and 734 deaths. The municipal corporation has divided Mumbai into seven zones and assigned seven IAS officers in the city to keep a close eye on their respective zones. Their target over the next few days is to increase the doubling rate from 10 days to 20 days.
Below table shows the comparison the data released on May 17 vs. May 12, 2020. Further, the ward wise data shows the areas which have been sealed by the BMC
Though the number of red zones in Mumbai have reduced, the state government has decided to extend the lockdown until May 31, 2020. Following the directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, a new set of guidelines will have to be followed in the country, to ensure no further spread of coronavirus is observed.
