Mumbai remains the worst affected city across the country with 1,703 cases, including 101 deaths being reported so far. In order to curb the spread of the virus, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared 381 containment zones in the city. In Mumbai, Worli is one hotspot with around 20 per cent of the total cases being recorded in the area.
Following which, the authorities have declared Worli Koliwada as COVID-19 containment zone. The movement of people has been restricted in the Worli-Koliwada area.
The slums in Mumbai have emerged as hotbeds for COVID-19 and are adding to the rising number of cases in the city. The BMC has attributed the rise to aggressive testing in slum areas Worli Koliwada, BDD chawl and Jijamata Nagar areas.
Aaditya Thackeray, the MLA of Worli constituency released a video address amid coronavirus crisis in his constituency. In his message, he said, "I am sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. I hear there has been a shortage of milk and vegetables. We are working to fix that. But we will have to put up with it for now because this is a question of our lives".
Looking at the situation in the city, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced earlier that the lockdown in Maharashtra will be extended till April 30. However, on April 14, PM Narendra Modi announced that the nation-wide lockdown will be extended till May 3.
In the meantime, the BMC has planned to roll out the anti-malarial drug, hydroxychloroquine in Worli Koliwada as well as in Dharavi as prophylaxis — a treatment course administered to prevent disease — for the community.
