The leaders of the opposition party are planning to pass a no-confidence motion against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) commissioner Ajoy Mehta citing that he not only failed in carrying out his duties but he also takes decisions ignoring corporators. The motion was presented by LoP Ravi Raja on the behalf of leaders of opposition in BMC.

Leaders of the opposition have requested the mayor to conduct a special meet to discuss the same.

According to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, if 1/8th of 227 corporators back the proposal of no confidence motion, then the state government can transfer the commissioner. Hence, LoP Ravi Raja has roped in leaders of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to pass the motion.

LoP leaders accused commissioner of acting suspiciously

Leaders of the opposition are accusing Ajoy Mehta of acting dubiously in connection to the Kamala Mill fire incident where a fire engulfed 1 Above and Mojo’s Bistro on December 29, 2017, and claimed 14 lives. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had asked Ajoy Mehta to appoint a committee to look into the matter but the opposition party leaders said that they don't trust him and a retired judge should conduct an inquiry regarding the same.

Rooftop policy decision

The hotel rooftop policy was denied by the improvement committee and the same is pending but the commissioner went out of his way, made changes in the policy and approved it. Kamala Mills fire incident was the result of his decision, said opposition party leaders. Along with this, the commissioner denied the road projects which were approved by the standing committee. He had also decided not to use paver blocks on the road but he went ahead with the plan.

Opposition party leaders further said that the commissioner planned the launch of a mobile app with the hands of the CM but did not inform the Mayor. This incident outraged Shiv Sena party leaders who created a commotion in BMC against the commissioner. LoP Ravi Raja believes that they will get SS and BJP’s support for the motion.
